This is the second part of my review of The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen.  My first part of the review was posted here.  I was trying to have a professional tone to impress Harper Collins and our webmistress, but I made an error.  The novel has three “Books”, not two; and there are fourteen chapters, not twelve.  Also, I must add that the novel has a lot of adult content and adult language. As noted in the first review, The Queen of the Tearling is about Kelsea Raleigh who was raised in hiding after the death of her mother, Queen Elyssa.  She grew up in a cottage in the…

Here's a quick rundown for those who don't know: Muggle Quidditch is a co-ed collegiate sport consisting of two teams of seven players - three chasers, two beaters, one keeper and one seeker. The chasers attempt to throw a volleyball (quaffle) through one of three hoops for 10 points, while the beaters fire other volleyballs (bludgers) at them and the keepers (goalies) guard the hoops. The seekers, of course, try to catch the snitch, who is a runner dressed in yellow with a tennis ball-filled sock tucked in his waistband. All players use one hand (due to holding a broomstick between…

J.K. Rowling is giving Harry Potter fans a present this Halloween. The author will release a new story on Oct. 31, centered (appropriately) on one of the more villainous characters in the series: Dolores Umbridge. Umbridge was first introduced in the fifth book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, as the Senior Undersecretary to the Minister of Magic and the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts. She’s evil, vicious and obsessed with pink and cats, so pretty much the second best villain in the series (after You-Know-Who himself). In one of the most memorable scenes…

My best friend once came really close to dying. She and her boyfriend had a serious motorbike accident where they both came off, at speed, on a busy road. She said in those moments that she thought certain were her last she didn’t care for anything but how her family & friends would be after she’d gone. She didn’t feel sad, fearful, in pain or hard-done-by, she simply felt concern for those she loved. The idea that grief “gets easier” is not something I am comfortable with. Humans experience emotions, not just one, a consistent combination of them. J.K.
